December 13, 2024 is rather an incredibly special day in the game of golf. Not only does the second edition of the 2024 Grand Thornton Invitational kickstarted on Friday, but also Rickie Fowler turned 36 at the Tiburon Golf Club.
And of course, this edition is all the more special because his LPGA Tour partner for the event Lexi Thompson will be retiring from full time professional golf after this appearance. She will be enjoying time with her friends and family.
A few hours before the event was set to kick start, Rickie Fowler was also seen discussing things with his caddie. And well, given then dynamics that Thompson and Fowler share, it was a given that she would make the day more special for him.
Lexi Thompson’s surprise for Rickie Fowler
Lexi Thompson and Rickie Fowler were set to tee off alongside Allisen Corpuz and Sahith Theegala at 10:30 am ET. The moment they went to tee off in the first hole, all the cameras were pointed towards Lexi Thompson.
She was seen walking with a cake in her hand, and guess what colour it was. Orange of course. Rickie Fowler wears orange on the final day of a golf tournament to honor Oklahoma State University, where he played in 2007 and 2008.
The Cowboys, Oklahoma State’s golf team, have an orange and black color scheme. In 2008, Fowler won the Ben Hogan Award, which is given to the top collegiate golfer in the country. It was a rather fun video. The candles blow off before Lexi Thompson could reach Fowler, and well, it turned out to be their usual fun banter on the course.

The entire crowd sung happy birthday for the 6X PGA Tohr player as Thompson gave him the cake. He took it in his hands, and well pretended to blow the candles. The duo have indeed demonstrated a great camaraderie on the course, and well this was indeeed another testament to their bond.
With this being Lexi Thompson’s final appearance as a full time pro golfer, both of them are hoping to get hold of the trophy this year. Now whether they will be able to bag it or not, only time will tell. Stay tuned to find out what happens!
