The players and captains, both past and present, have been instrumental in making the Ryder Cup one of the most iconic and sought-after events in golf and global sports. Although no players had originally requested compensation, the PGA of America Board of Directors has voted to significantly increase the allocation for U.S. Ryder Cup team members.
The amount will rise from $200,000—allocated to charity since 1999—to $500,000. Of that total, $300,000 will go to charities of the players’ choosing, while the remaining amount will serve as a stipend.
Paige Spiranac shares her view on the new rule
Now this changes a lot of things. The golf community is as it is bound to the financial accusations. With so many top players moving to LIV Golf, fans have already started speculating that the game of golf is no longer about just passion. It is more on the monetary aspect, and commercialisation has seeped in. Even Paige Spiranac shared her two cents on the issue. She took to her official X account and retweeted the news shared by the page of PGA of America.
She wrote, “Players in the Ryder Cup will receive 200k stipend and 300k towards charity. I am not privy to the inside information to know if this is fair or not. Selfishly I love the idea that the pride of representing your country is the driving force in the Ryder Cup not money. But from a business perspective they should be fairly compensated. I just wish this wasn’t public information considering all the money conversations surrounding golf right now.”
Well, already there has been a lot of buzz regarding the Ryder Cup too, which was once a patriotic event, being completely commercialised. After a year of the contrived the players’s compensation in Rome, the PGA of America has set the ticket prices for the Ryder Cup one day at a whopping $750. A lot of the significant people questioned the decision.
Donald Trump recently appeared as a guest on the Let’s Go podcast, hosted by Bill Belichick, Max Crosby, Peter King, and Jim Gray. During the conversation about the current state of golf, the former President expressed concern, saying, “Fans are being shut out, and it’s terrible.” He further explained how, in the past, people would buy tickets for an entire season, but now many are reluctant to spend so much money for just a single match.
