NBA Superstar Stephen Curry Speaks on Building His Own Golf League

For over a decade, Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has established himself as one of the undisputed legends of the NBA. However, besides being a basketball maestro, Chef Curry is also interested in expanding his passion for golf.

While we mostly know of Steph writing his legacy in basketball, golfing has been a love for the Warriors superstar since childhood. Curry started playing the sport when he was ten and has continued ever since. He considers himself a scratch golfer, which means he would typically shoot even par or better for the course. This would be quite a flex because only an estimated 2% of golfers can say the same.

Curry always had a soft spot for underdogs, considering he was one as well entering the league. Keeping that on note, the Dubs legend started his Underrated Golf Tour, which seeks to give kids from underprivileged and underrepresented backgrounds access to the sport.

The tour recently hosted its final event, the Curry Cup, from September 2nd to September 4th. Underrated has seen 96 teenagers playing half a dozen events across the United States, all free of charge, with facilities such as flight tickets, hotels, meals, and clubs, all paid for by Curry and his foundation. The top 24 boys and girls emerging from this tour competed in this event.

Speaking to Sports Illustrated in a recent interview, Curry reflected on the legacy he is building off the court with his new golf league. “I look forward to seeing somebody hold up a trophy on the PGA tour and being like super proud of this moment and they’re like, ‘Oh, where’d you get your start?’ ‘Oh, the Underrated golf tour. To me, that would be the greatest compliment in the world,” said the 4x NBA champion.

Steph is confident that the impact of his efforts will someday definitely show itself with the emerging new talents coming out of his golf tour. “Golf needs that diversity, that participation, getting more black and brown kids out there, getting more kids that deserve the opportunity, the access to the game at the highest level,he added.

Off the court, Stephen Curry can often be seen participating in golfing tournaments and being as good as he is in basketball. In 2023, Curry sank a hole-in-one on a par-3, 152-yard hole at the American Century Championship, leading the competition with 44 points. He eventually went on to win the championship over Mardy Fish as he holed an eagle putt on 18 to secure the victory.

This year, due to his commitment to Team USA basketball for the Olympics, Curry missed out on his golfing endeavors in the off-season. However, we can expect him to hit the golf course with his clubs soon enough whenever the pressure of the NBA season alleviates off him.
