Laurie Canter joined LIV Golf back in 2022. He bailed on a few events on the DP World Tour to begin his inaugural season too. Outside of the all-exempt category, Canter found himself in a situation where his opportunities to compete on his home tour were limited.
However, this also allowed him to play in other events during weeks when he wasn’t in the starting lineup on the DP World Tour. There was one catch though. Just like all the other professionals, the moment he joined the newly formed league, he was suspended from playing on the PGA Tour.
The letter stated that he would be ineligible on the tour for 12 months after his last LIV event. To this, he responded, “Thank you for clarifying that. I think your policy is absurd”. But turns out, he would have been someone who could change the victory.
Laurie Canter chasing for the PGA Tour card
After having a great season on LIV Golf, Laurie Canter started fixating on the DP World Tour events. Much like most other LIV Golfers. The DP World Tour’s controversial ’10 Cards Initiative’ has enabled top golfers without existing exemptions to gain playing rights on the American circuit.
Canter is one of those who has benefited from this initiative in 2024, currently sitting at 18th in the rankings and aiming to break into the top 10. If he is able to grab a spot, despite the fact that he will end up missing the first few events, he might grab the opportunity to get back his PGA Tour card. But, it is not all that easy either.
According to Mirror, “The Englishman currently has 11 players between him and the last PGA Tour card on offer in the Race to Dubai Rankings, but knows two impressive performances in Abu Dhabi and Dubai this week could see him play his way in.”
However, the conditions include the fact that the player will still have to serve a ban before he is able to compete in one of the events next season, because of the previous loyalties imparted on him when he decided to join the breakaway league. This did not make him happy at all.
