Joel Dahmen Faces Four-Stroke Penalty for Extra Club in Bag, Puts PGA Tour Status at Risk

The Shriners Children’s Open kickstarted on Thursday. While the round had a lot of exciting events taking place, one among them was a rather gloomy one. Joel Dahmen was given a 4-shot penalty. But what happened exactly to have put him under that spot?

The 36-year-old started the round with an even par on the first two holes. However, as he walked down with his caddie Geno to the fourth tee, he was a little exhausted. He went towards his bag to grab a sip of water, and that was when the entire blunder was spotted.

He opened his bag to have found a spare 4-iron with him. Now, you must be wondering what is wrong with this incident. Well, according to the rules of the PGA Tour board, players are allowed to carry only fourteen clubs in their bags. He was penalized for carrying one too many clubs. “I don’t know how it got there. It sucks. It sucks at the spot I’m in as well,” he told the media afterward.

He reported the incident himself to the members, and as a result, had to go through two strokes for every hole because of the violation he made. He ended up finishing with a 5-over 76 on 131 position. “It was one of those moments where you want to lose it, and you want to get mad. You want to be mad at yourself, you want to get mad at Geno, you want to get mad at the world,” he continued.

Now, ahead of the Saturday round, Dahmen ended up withdrawing from the tournament altogether. Well, this might be a rather daunting moment for him, as the American is in danger of losing his PGA Tour Card after the penalty. Stay tuned to find out what happens ultimately.
