“Theoretically that’s what kind of cost me the tournament but I played well. I played solid”, said Nelly Korda at Massachusetts on Sunday. She etched her name in the LPGA record books after winning her record-tying fifth straight tournament with a two-stroke victory in The Chevron Championship. Korda joins Nancy Lopez (1978) and Annika Sorenstam (2004-05) as the only players to win five consecutive LPGA events.
The Rolex No. 1 player also won another victory at the Mizuho Americas Open, but soon she started facing the downfall of the amazing season that she was having. The 26 YOU missed back-to-back cuts from May through June. She participated in a Major and the Olympics as well but dropped down below the top-20 list on the leaderboard.
At the AIG Women’s she had an impressive first two rounds. However, due to the inclement weather, Korda ended up scoring a disappointing 75 in the penultimate round and ended the match with an even par. She lost only by two strokes to Lydia Ko, tying for the second position. However, it was not all a loss for her. She became the third player to bag the Rolex ANNIKA Major Award after earning her 12th career top-10 finish in a major championship. Earlier only Michelle Wie West (2014), and Lilia Vu (2023) won the prestigious award.
However, with the FM Championship approaching in just a few days, her name was nowhere to be found on the list. While a lot of fans speculated her taking a break after the disappointment, that might not be the case. Although nothing has been confirmed, yet she might be prepping for the Solheim Cup in September.
Nelly Korda was one among the nine players who were automatically selected to play for Team USA in Europe, which is indeed a prestigious win. Not wanting to wear off, she has probably decided to take a break from the field so that after two years of losing the match, team USA can finally grab the trophy!
