The Solheim Cup is one of the most prestigious events on the Ladies golf circuit. It was first brought into action in 1990 to support female golfers. Founder Karsten Solheim and his wife Louise began sponsoring the LPGA Tour events in 1975, and among them, the first was the Karsten-PING Open. Almost two decades later, he opened the Solheim Cup. Despite being such a huge event, the surprising fact is that there is no financial reward given to the golfers participating in the event.
They solely compete for their country, continent, and of course the pride and honour it brings playing for your home place. It is pretty much similar to the Ryder Cup on the men’s golf circuit. However, there is a rather historic trophy that the winning team gets to take to their country after defeating the opponent.
All you need to know about the Solheim Cup trophy
The Solheim Cup trophy has been a historic element at the event, because it has remained the same since its inception, over three decades ago. It was designed by Billy Briggs during the first tournament and is completely made of crystal-cut glass. The front of the trophy also has a rather huge logo of the Solheim Cup, which makes it distinctively special for the winners of the event, when they take it back home.
It is generally presented to the captain of the team that wins, and later on the playing 12 members join in for celebration. Weighing more than 20 pounds, it is about 19 inches in height. This of course includes the has of the trophy, which is made of wood, with silver patches attached to it all around. The diameter of the wooden base is 8 inches and the top is about 4-inches wide.
This year, the European team will be led by Suzann Petterson and the American team will be led by Stacy Lewis. The trophy has been lifted by the European team back-to-back for two straight years. This time, the American team is in full swing to take back to treasure to their country. Do you think they will be able to do it? Let us know in the comments section below!
