Brooks Koepka is stuck with a T4 finish after the second round with Adrian Meronk, and Anirban Lahiri. However, he had an exceptional opening round at the LIV Golf Chicago on Friday.
He is currently four strokes away from Jon Rahm, who entered the Sunday round with a lead. Koepka carded eight birdies and had scored an impressive 8-under to gain the lead, that he lost on Saturday. While he had complete control of his game, his strategy on the green stood out. And well, looks like he has some people to thank for it.
Brooks Koepka thanks putting coach and his putter for the amazing round
At the post-round presser on Friday in Chicago, Brooks Koepka himself was left so impressed with his putting game, that he was convinced that he will not let go of the Scotty Cameron putter that he has been using. However, he was reminded of the advice his putting coach, Jeff Pierce gave him.
But yeah, I just got too mechanical. I was talking with Jeff Pierce, my putting coach, and I felt like I was hitting so many lips, and it was just aggravating me. But we talked about it, and it’s very difficult to hit lips. You’re hitting good putts sometimes they just might not go in,” Koepka told the media. He believes that the speed was dying in front of the hole and he could have done way better. This is why they have gone back to the basics of the putting training.
“I think that’s something we’ve gone back to basics, not worrying about if the face is so many degrees open or it’s rotating so many degrees through; it’s more of just get up and react and go hit it. I think that’s something everybody can do. When it’s not going well, just go back to basics and kind of regroup from there,” added the 2023 PGA Championship winner.
