The International Team at the 2024 Presidents Cup is led by Mike Weir. He has had several accolades in the world of golf which includes his victory at the 2003 Masters, and eight PGA Tour wins. While all of these do add up to his significant impact in the realm of the sport, for him, one of the best moments in his career was at the 2007 Presidents Cup.
It was defeating the golfing legend, Tiger Woods. The Canadian was only among very few players who could do so during Mr. T’s prime time in golf, and thus, even after almost two decades, the captain still remembers the moment enough.
At the Royal Montreal Club on Thursday, Mike Weir went back to the most ‘memorable day’ of his life. The PGA Tour took to their official X account and even shared the video from the defeat on the 18th hole. Weir had said, “2007 Sunday morning. Got up, had breakfast, read the paper, and I read an article that said, ‘This match is going to be like feeding a lamb to a lion. It made me more motivated to be more focused to, you know, get in my head that I’m going to win this match.”
He continued at the post-round presser stating how he entered the first tee with that attitude and started with a nice start. As he walked back to the 18th tee, the match between him and Woods was tied, and of course, there was a lot of adrenaline pumping because he had just made a huge putt to pull even and Jack Nicklaus too was standing to witness the match.
He hit and bagged the win from the legend. Well, that was not all for the highlights. The then US Team Captain Jack Nicklaus also congratulated him on the 18th-hole shot. He knew it was a tough moment, and the fact that he did indeed beat him was incredible!
