Will Charlie Woods be able to follow in his father’s footsteps? While for the 15 YO golfing prodigy, being the son of the legend Tiger Woods is a lot to carry on his shoulders, it is also mandatory to keep in mind that he envisions becoming the future of golf too. But with the up-and-coming teenage golfer, the question is – Will he truly be able to make himself the next big thing in golf?
While with his consistency and will last year, it seemed that Charlie Woods would take over the sport, just like Mr. T did, but the hopes of it seem to be fading away. Despite his recent feat of accolade, it seems like a far-sighted dream at the moment.
Charlie Woods: The tale of miseries
The past few months sure have not been a blessing to Junior Woods. They have mostly ended on a sour note, especially when it comes to making it big in the PGA Tour! Back in February, Charlie Woods made his first attempt at qualifying for a PGA Tour event, which was also his first step into the professional world of golf at the 2024 Cognizant Classic.
However, he failed to qualify, bagging a score of 16 over 86. Woods opened the game with a par. As he kept on carding bogeys and bogeys, it ended up affecting his chances of qualifying. He even bagged a double bogey on the fifth hole. He also attempted to qualify for the US Open but failed to make the cut line.
Apart from the major disappointments, he recently also played at the Future Masters at Dothan Country Club. There too he landed himself outside the Top-50 list, finishing at a T103, with 73-76 km in the last two rounds. However, there is a new ray of hope for Charlie Woods, if only he succeeds in grabbing the opportunity.
Charlie Woods to make a debut at the USGA
Charlie Woods finally has an accomplishment to boast about in the 2024 season. The 15 YO attempted to qualify for the US Junior Amateur. Although he began the match at the Eagle Trace Golf Club with a bogey-double bogey, he ended up carding a 1-under 71, which earned him the leading score among the other qualifiers. “I didn’t play great my first two holes. But I played well for the last 16. I just told myself not to make any more bogeys or doubles and I took advantage of some nice birdie looks when I had them,” said Junior Woods.
He appeared at a USGA event for the first time at Oakland Hills that was scheduled from July 22 to July 28. He will be competing among 264 players, through 36 holes, eyeing to become one among the 64 players to head to the match play. While Charlie Woods finally got a chance to earn a name for himself in the suburbs of Detroit, he failed to grab the opportunity there as well. Well, looks like it will indeed take him a lot more years to be able to walk up to the expectations of the golfing legend that his father is.
