“That’s Tough”: Lexie Thompson Gives Her Younger Self the Credit After Declaring Her Retirement From Golf

Lexi Thompson’s transition away from full-time golf has revealed a candid side of her personality that fans have only glimpsed sporadically during her career. At 29, Thompson announced over the summer her decision to step back from a full LPGA schedule, while leaving the door open for select appearances.

This week’s CME Group Tour Championship serves as a poignant farewell, marking the conclusion of her 14th season on tour. Lexi Thompson has yet to commit to how many events she will compete in next year, but she already holds several coveted opportunities.

Her top-10 finish at this year’s Women’s PGA Championship secures her a spot in the 2025 field, while her victory at the 2017 ANA Inspiration (now the Chevron Championship) grants her lifetime eligibility for that tournament.

Reflecting on her major triumph, Thompson revealed it remains close to her heart. “It’s still a memory that I’ll cherish for the rest of my life, getting my first major win at that event,” she said. “It’s very special to me,” adding that the Chevron Championship will be “circled on my calendar” as a likely start.

Also, with ending up in the CME field and being among the top 60 in CME points, the 11-time winner will be near the top of the LPGA’s priority list for the entire season. “Like I said before when I made the announcement, [the stepping away] is just from full-time golf,” Thompson said. “I may tee it up a few times next year. A matter of when and what tournaments I don’t know. I am just going to take time for myself and take it day by day.”

Thompson’s unique tradition of gifting shoes to fans began during her teenage years when she first played in the Dinah Shore. While not a weekly ritual, it has been a meaningful way for her to connect with her supporters, made possible by her sponsor, Puma, which has provided her with an ample supply of shoes over the years—though that stock is now running low. “I love doing it,” Thompson shared. “To see the smile on fans’ faces and the impact, that means more to me than anything.”

Golf Digest took to their official X account and reported the news, “As Lexi Thompson prepares to step away from being a full-time tour player, she offered some thoughts about her present and future.”

Well, giving out their pair of shoes for a golfer is indeed a rather important thing. What are your thoughts on this? Let us know in the comments section below!
